Caring Students to Design and Create a Community Garden

The Educational Partnership Foundation Funds O.S. Geiger Students Garden Project

Calgary, AB – As part of the Tim Hortons Foundation, the students were required to do a community service project. They assessed the needs of the community and discussed about having a place where the students’ and community members could come together in a project. This creates accessible options for fresh vegetables for the community. The students will be responsible for educating all grade levels on how the community garden works and how it is cared for by the community. The teachers then took their idea and discovered the possibilities of curricular connection and skills that the students would be able to learn that would be valuable as their development as Global Citizens.

Through this experience students have been developing and strengthen skills and knowledge in a variety of areas such as mathematics, literacy and health and life skills. Students have been active and engaged members of the school community who are excited to not only beautify the school grounds but apply their skills and knowledge to the actual building of the garden plots.

In order to successfully complete the project, our students will need a considerable amount of money for lumber, soil and building supplies. We reached out to The Educational Partnership Foundation and applied for a grant for the amount of $500.00. We received word in March that we were successful in obtaining the grant to move forward with our community service project. The students and staff are excited to now apply the money towards making the garden a reality at O.S. Geiger School. “These students are going to learn many life skills by assembling this community garden, and TEPF is very proud to support them on their journey” says Din Ladak, President and CEO of TEPF.

TEPF will be visiting O.S. Geiger School to present their grant at 9:45am on April 28, 2017.
